The Faith Journey of Zimbabwean Migrants in South Africa
On the last Sunday of every month, a beautiful sight unfolds in some cities of South Africa. Catholic asylum-seekers, migrants, and refugees, mainly from Zimbabwe, come together to partake in a Eucharistic celebration. These individuals have found a sense of community and solace in a foreign land, making South Africa their new home.

For many of these migrants, these monthly liturgical gatherings have become more than just a religious event – they serve as a place of meeting, prayer, and mutual support.
Gratitude and Challenges
Despite the challenges they face, Zimbabwean migrants in South Africa remain grateful for the opportunities the host country provides. Many of them are able to work and support their families, both in South Africa and back in Zimbabwe. However, personal safety remains a significant concern, with many migrants experiencing violent crimes or facing the threat of deportation due to legal document checks.
Support from the Church
Amidst these difficulties, Zimbabwean migrants actively contribute to the pastoral life of their local parishes. The Southern African Catholic Bishops Conference (SACBC) Migrants and Refugees Office plays a crucial role in encouraging initiatives that address the challenges faced by migrant communities. These efforts include mental health support and educational empowerment programs for children and young individuals.
A Message of Hope
In a message for the 110th World Day of Migrants and Refugees, Pope Francis reminded the world of the importance of welcoming migrants and refugees, stating, “It is possible to see in the migrants of our time a living image of God’s people on their way to the eternal homeland.” These words resonate deeply with the experiences of Zimbabwean migrants in South Africa, offering them inspiration and hope in their journey.
As these migrants gather monthly to reaffirm their faith and strengthen social bonds, they continue to navigate the challenges of migrant life with resilience and unwavering faith.
