Exciting news from up north! Canadians have voted to bring the Liberal Party back into power, electing party leader Mark Carney as the new Prime Minister of Canada. The election saw a close race between Carney and Conservative Party candidate Pierre Poilievre, with discussions on tariff policies by the Trump administration playing a significant role in the campaign.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) declared Carney the winner just 15 minutes after polls closed, marking a surprising comeback for the Liberal Party. This victory comes after over nine years of leadership under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Carney, a former central banker, stepped in as Prime Minister following Trudeau’s resignation last month. The Liberal Party is expected to secure 168 seats in Parliament, just shy of the 172 needed for a majority government, according to the BBC.
Despite being a practicing Catholic, Carney differs from the Church’s stance on abortion. He has expressed support for a woman’s right to choose, a view he maintains will not interfere with his leadership.
Poilievre, on the other hand, also confirmed that his party would not introduce laws limiting abortion access during his campaign.
Bishop William McGrattan of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops highlighted the “disconnect” seen among politicians like Carney when it comes to aligning faith with political decisions.
Prior to the election, the bishops’ conference released a statement emphasizing the importance of considering issues like the right to life from conception to natural death for Catholic voters.
