Welcome to a groundbreaking event in the world of professional cycling! The 108th edition of the renowned “Giro d’Italia” is set to make history as it pays tribute to Pope Francis with a unique route that includes a ride through the Vatican gardens.
Set to take place on June 1, 2025, this final leg of the Giro will see riders entering Vatican City State for the very first time, embarking on an unforgettable journey through the Vatican Gardens as they make their way towards the finish line in Rome.
The decision to include this special route was inspired by Pope Francis himself, who expressed his desire to see the Giro d’Italia pass through the Vatican during the Jubilee year.
Cyclists will start their Vatican adventure at the Porta del Perugino near Casa Santa Marta, before heading to the Caracalla Baths for the official start of the race. The grand finale will see riders completing a 143-kilometre race, culminating in a thrilling finish at the Circus Maximus, where they will complete eight laps through the heart of Rome’s city centre.
Present at the official unveiling of the route were Rome’s Mayor Roberto Gualtieri and Vatican Bishop Paul Tighe, Secretary of the Dicastery for Culture and Education. Bishop Tighe emphasized the symbolic significance of the Vatican passage, highlighting that it represents not just a tourist route, but a meaningful journey.
As riders pedal through the “Via Mariana” in the Vatican Gardens, adorned with images of the Virgin Mary from around the world, they will embark on a symbolic journey across the globe, adding a spiritual dimension to the sporting celebration. This unique segment of the Giro is a reflection of the Jubilee of Hope, uniting sport, faith, and international unity in honor of Pope Francis’ vision.
So get ready for a Giro d’Italia like no other, where sport, faith, and global solidarity come together in a celebration of hope and unity. Stay tuned for an unforgettable race that promises to inspire and captivate audiences around the world!
