The Pious Passing of His Holiness Pope Francis
As the world mourns the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, a solemn ritual took place in St. Peter’s Basilica to seal his coffin, preserving the memory of the beloved Argentine-born Pope. Over 250,000 pilgrims gathered to pay their respects, reflecting on the remarkable life and papacy of Pope Francis.
Inside the sealed coffin lie tokens of Pope Francis’ pontificate – his pallium, coins, and medals, along with a special “Rogito” or Deed summarizing his life and legacy. This Deed, written in Latin, was placed in a metal cylinder inside the coffin, a tribute to the 266th Pope who captured the hearts of the Church and humanity.
The Deed, a testament to Pope Francis’ journey from his birth in Buenos Aires to his election as Pope on March 13, 2013, highlights his dedication to the Gospel and the Church. His humble beginnings, his service as Archbishop of Buenos Aires, and his papacy marked by a commitment to the poor and marginalized are all captured in this historic document.
Throughout his pontificate, Pope Francis championed dialogue, mercy, and inclusivity, reaching out to Muslims, other religious leaders, and the most vulnerable in society.
