Expected to draw a crowd of several hundred thousand people from all walks of life, the funeral Mass will be a testament to the universal impact of Pope Francis’ message of inclusivity and compassion. With around 250 cardinals, numerous bishops, priests, and religious figures in attendance, the service will mark the beginning of nine days of mourning, as per the Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis.
A Solemn Tribute
The funeral liturgy will feature readings from sacred texts, hymns sung by the Choir of the Sistine Chapel, and prayers in multiple languages. Cardinal Re will deliver a homily honoring the life and legacy of Pope Francis, followed by the Rite of Final Commendation.
A Journey of Reflection
After the Mass, the Pontiff’s coffin will be carried to Saint Mary Major, a four-kilometer procession through the streets of Rome. Along the way, the people of Rome will have the opportunity to bid farewell to their beloved Bishop, as the Sistine Chapel choir accompanies the somber march.
Once at Saint Mary Major, a final tribute will be paid by a group of marginalized individuals, reflecting Pope Francis’ commitment to those on the peripheries. The burial will be a private affair, with Cardinal Camerlengo marking the coffin before the remains are laid to rest.
A Global Audience
The funeral Mass will be broadcast worldwide, allowing people from all corners of the globe to join in mourning the loss of Pope Francis. With delegations from over 130 countries expected to attend, and thousands of journalists covering the event, the world will come together to honor the life and teachings of a truly remarkable leader.
