Insights from the Briefing
The Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, shared details from the meeting held in the Vatican’s New Synod Hall. A total of 149 Cardinals participated in this crucial gathering following the Pope’s passing.
The Congregation commenced with a prayer at 9:10 AM and continued until 12:20 PM, featuring 33 interventions from the Cardinals on various topics concerning the Church and the world.
Universi Dominici Gregis, the apostolic constitution, was read up to paragraph 32 during the session. The highlight of the meeting was Archbishop Diego Ravelli’s explanation of Pope Francis’ funeral rite as a solemn tribute to a shepherd, not a sovereign.
Funeral Arrangements
Archbishop Ravelli clarified that the funeral Mass on Saturday at 10:00 AM will not showcase the Pope’s body on a raised platform. Visiting dignitaries will follow a specific protocol, with the Presidents of Argentina and Italy leading the procession.
The journey to St. Mary Major from the Vatican will be a significant event, symbolizing the late Pope’s legacy. The Cardinals will also pay their respects at Pope Francis’s tomb in a private ceremony.
