The Final Journey of Pope Francis
As the world mourns the loss of Pope Francis, his mortal remains have been transferred from the Casa Santa Marta to St. Peter’s Basilica. This solemn procession marks the beginning of a period where the faithful can pay their respects to the beloved Pontiff before his funeral on Saturday.
Leading the Rite of Translation
The College of Cardinals, gathered in Rome following the death of Pope Francis, led the Rite of Translation on Wednesday morning. Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, initiated the liturgical rite with a prayer for the soul of the late Pope.
A Touching Farewell
Thousands of people gathered in St. Peter’s Square to witness the procession of the Pope’s coffin. As it was carried into the Basilica, the crowd erupted into subdued applause, honoring the man who had served the Church for 12 years.
A Final Tribute
Inside St. Peter’s Basilica, Cardinal Farrell led a Liturgy of the Word, highlighting the eternal hope and love that Pope Francis spread during his papacy. The ceremony concluded with the haunting chants of the Salve Regina, a hymn to the Holy Queen.
Final Resting Place
The Basilica will remain open to the public until the funeral on Saturday morning. The Funeral Mass, presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, will take place in St. Peter’s Square, where dignitaries and faithful from around the world will bid farewell to Pope Francis. His body will then be laid to rest in the Basilica of St. Mary Major.
Let us join together in prayer and reflection as we honor the life and legacy of Pope Francis, a true shepherd of the Church.
