Witnessing the final moments of Pope Francis on Easter Monday was Italian nurse Massimiliano Strappetti, who had been caring for the aging pontiff since 2022 as his personal nurse.
Prior to his role as Pope Francis’ personal nurse, Strappetti served as the nursing coordinator for the Vatican’s health department. He had joined the Vatican in 2002 after gaining experience in Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.

Strappetti’s close bond with the Pope was evident as he accompanied Francis on various public events and apostolic journeys, especially after the pontiff’s struggles with knee problems in 2022.
During the Pope’s final moments, Strappetti was by his side, receiving the Holy Father’s last words and expressions of gratitude. Pope Francis thanked him for bringing him back to the Square, showing the deep trust and care between them.
