The gathering of approximately sixty cardinals in the Synod Hall was a solemn affair, marked by a moment of silent prayer for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis. Following the guidelines outlined in the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, the cardinals pledged to uphold the norms governing the interregnum and the election of the new Roman Pontiff.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, shared the spiritual testament of Pope Francis during the session. The Adsumus, a traditional invocation of the Holy Spirit, resonated through the hall, setting the tone for the proceedings.
The congregation also confirmed the schedule for the translation of the Holy Father’s body and his funeral, which will be held on Saturday, 26 April, at 10:00 AM. The second General Congregation is set for Wednesday, 23 April, following the ceremonial transfer of the Pope’s body to the Basilica for public viewing.
During the nine days of mourning, known as “Novemdiales,” a Mass will be held in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, 27 April, where Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin will preside. The daily Masses at 5:00 PM will provide an opportunity for the faithful to pray for the eternal repose of Pope Francis.
In compliance with the directives of Universi Dominici Gregis, a commission of three Cardinals was chosen by lot to support the Camerlengo in overseeing the Church during the sede vacante. The trio, representing the different orders of the College of Cardinals, will rotate every three days.
The evening will conclude with a Rosary in St. Peter’s Square at 7:30 p.m. Rome time, inviting believers worldwide to unite in prayer for the late Pope Francis.
