The Final Wishes of Pope Francis: A Spiritual Testament
Recently, Pope Francis’ spiritual testament, dated 29 June 2022, has been unveiled, shedding light on his final wishes for his burial in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major.

Looking towards the end of his earthly journey with hope in eternal life, Pope Francis expressed his desire to be laid to rest in the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major. Throughout his life and ministry, he held a deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, whom he entrusted himself to at all times.
His wish is for his mortal remains to find their final resting place in this ancient Marian sanctuary, where he always sought solace and offered prayers during his Apostolic Journeys. The burial niche he has chosen is located between the Pauline Chapel and the Sforza Chapel, marked simply with the inscription: Franciscus.
With the cost of the burial covered by a generous benefactor, Pope Francis has ensured that his final journey will be in accordance with his wishes. He expressed gratitude to those who have loved and prayed for him, offering his sufferings for peace in the world and unity among nations.
