Bergoglio, an Argentine from Buenos Aires, was 88 years old and was elected as Pope, after Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation twelve years ago on March 13, 2013. In March, his health deteriorated due to bilateral pneumonia, leading to a 38-day hospitalization at Policlinico Gemelli, which ended on Sunday, March 23. He gradually resumed activities until yesterday, Easter Sunday, when Francis took a ride in the Popemobile through St. Peter’s Square for the last time, presided over the Urbi et Orbi blessing, and briefly greeted US Vice President Vance.
The Pope’s funeral will take place within 9 days, followed by the conclave to elect his successor in a month, after the general congregations.

Disbelief and sorrow among the faithful in St. Peter’s Square, where Bergoglio had greeted the pilgrims just yesterday morning. ‘It is a painful and deeply distressing moment for the entire Church. We entrust our beloved Pope Francis to the embrace of the Lord, in the certainty that, as he himself taught us, ‘everything is revealed in mercy; everything is resolved in the merciful love of the Father’. I ask all the Churches in Italy to toll the church bells as a sign of mourning and to facilitate moments of personal and communal prayer, in communion with each other and with the universal Church,’ said the President of the CEI Zuppi.
What Happens Now
The transfer of the Pope’s body to St. Peter’s Basilica for the homage of all the faithful could take place on Wednesday morning, April 23, following the procedures that will be established and communicated tomorrow, after the first Cardinal Congregation. This was reported by the Director of the Press Office, Matteo Bruni.

Twelve Years of Pontificate
He arrived twelve years ago, on March 13, 2013, and the world came to know him for that simple “good evening.” It was his first greeting to the world, and that disarming simplicity already heralded a wave of newness, revolutionary. Jorge Mario Bergoglio took over the Church from that day and led it on courageous paths, opening the doors to “everyone, everyone, everyone,” and not worrying about that wing of Catholics who are always hesitant about innovations. He did so after the shock of Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation, but he managed to turn the page in a way that was difficult to imagine.
He was born in Buenos Aires on December 17, 1936, the son of Piedmontese migrants: his father, Mario, was an accountant employed in the railways, while his mother, Regina Sivori, took care of the house and the education of their five children. After graduating as a chemical technician, he chose the path of priesthood by entering the seminary; in 1958, he joined the novitiate of the Society of Jesus. This began a long life of service to the Church until he became the cardinal archbishop of Buenos Aires and, in 2013, the 266th Pontiff of the Catholic Church.
His openness to divorcees, homosexuals, the empowerment of women to give them the place that had been reserved only for cardinals for centuries. And then the Church “going out,” towards the most vulnerable, starting with migrants, his primary concern, to the poor. It was for the poor that he chose a name that no Pope in history had dared to choose: Francis, like the poor man of Assisi, also a revolutionary of his time.
