As Easter approaches, Pope Francis and the Chief Rabbi of Rome, Riccardo Di Segni, continue their tradition of exchanging messages of mutual good wishes, fostering a spirit of fraternal dialogue and interreligious friendship.
In a heartfelt message to Rabbi Riccardo Di Segni on Holy Thursday, Pope Francis extended his greetings to the Jewish community of Rome as they prepare to celebrate Pesach, the Jewish Passover of the year 5785.
“As the feast of Pesach draws near,” the Pope wrote to the Chief Rabbi of Rome, “I wish to extend my warmest and fraternal greetings to you and the beloved Jewish Community of Rome. This celebration serves as a reminder of how the Almighty delivered His beloved people from slavery and guided them to the Promised Land. May the eternal and merciful God continue to be with you today, showering your community with His abundant blessings. In His infinite goodness, may He always watch over you.”
Pope Francis concluded his message with a personal request: “I humbly ask for your continued prayers for me, as I offer you mine in return. May the Most High grant us the opportunity to deepen our friendship. Chag sameach.”
In response, Rabbi Di Segni reciprocated the good wishes for the Christian Easter. “As our respective Easter celebrations coincide,” he wrote, “I send you my warmest greetings, with a special prayer for your continued health. May the Lord bless our communities and strengthen our friendship, especially during these challenging times we are facing.”
