The Vatican Press Office has provided an encouraging update on Pope Francis’ health as he continues to recover at Casa Santa Marta. There have been improvements in his motor skills, breathing, and voice. The use of high-flow oxygen is now minimal and primarily for therapeutic purposes, with longer periods where the Pontiff can go without oxygenation.
Meetings and Therapies
While at his Vatican residence, Pope Francis is engaging in shorter work meetings with some Curia superiors and continuing motor, respiratory, and vocal physiotherapy. The use of high-flow oxygen is now minimal, primarily in the evenings and as needed, with longer periods where he can go without oxygen.
Holy Week Celebrations
The Press Office also provided details on the Holy Week celebrations. The Chrism Mass on Holy Thursday morning will be celebrated by Cardinal Domenico Calcagno, the President Emeritus of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See (APSA). The Good Friday Liturgy will be presided over by Cardinal Claudio Gugerotti, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches. Cardinal Baldo Reina, the Vicar General for the Diocese of Rome, will lead the Way of the Cross at the Colosseum. The Pope himself has delegated the cardinals to celebrate the various liturgies, and there is no confirmation yet on his presence at the Easter Triduum rites. The schedule for the celebrations at St. Peter’s Basilica has been released, with the Holy Thursday Mass at 6 pm to be presided over by Cardinal Mauro Gambettti, the Archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica. Eucharistic Adoration will continue until 10 pm.
