The celebration of the 2025 edition of World Youth Day in Cameroon was more than just a routine event; it was a vibrant kickoff to Holy Week. In the Diocese of Kumbo, located in the English-speaking region of Cameroon, a grand procession of young people carrying palms set the tone for the liturgical celebration. Thousands gathered at Saint Sylvester’s College of Sop, chanting “Hosanna to the Son of Mary” in unison.
Walking with Purpose
Bishop George Nkuo of the Diocese of Kumbo emphasized the importance of unity and purpose in his address to the youth. He urged them to accompany Christ to Jerusalem, not as a chaotic crowd, but as a united people walking alongside the Savior to experience the power of redemption.
In the Archdiocese of Douala, Archbishop Samuel Kleda joined thousands of young people to conclude the Archdiocesan three-year Synod for Youth, which began in 2022. The Archbishop shared an exhortation for the occasion, highlighting the recommendations made to address key issues identified during the Synod.
Celebrating Communion and Friendship
Over 4,000 youths from the Archdiocese of Yaoundé embarked on a pilgrimage at Saint Peter and Paul Parish in Nsimalen, guided by their mentors. In the Diocese of Edéa, hundreds of young people gathered at Saint Joseph the Worker Parish in Dyzangue under the guidance of Bishop Jean Bosco Ntep and diocesan youth chaplains. Father Bikéna Tonyè emphasized the importance of communion, friendship, and staying optimistic despite challenges.
Staying Strong in Faith
In the Diocese of Buea, youth congregated at the Divine Mercy Co-Cathedral with Bishop Michael Bibi, coinciding with the ongoing celebration of the Diocese’s 75th anniversary. Bishop Bibi encouraged the youth to embrace a deeper commitment to the Church, be proud ambassadors of Christ, and exemplify steadfast faith and obedience in the face of adversity.
