Welcome to Jerusalem, the holy city where Easter is celebrated by all Christian denominations on the same day this year. Fr. Mark Vertido Palafox, a Franciscan friar of the Custody of the Holy Land, shares the unique and special liturgical celebrations that will take place during Holy Week and Easter at the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre.
As the members of different Christian traditions come together to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus, the atmosphere in Jerusalem is filled with reverence and unity. The journey begins on Palm Sunday with a procession of palm branches, symbolizing the Lord’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem.
Throughout the week, Holy Thursday is marked by the Chrism Mass and the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, led by Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa. The night is dedicated to Eucharistic adoration, culminating in the placement of the Eucharist in the Holy Sepulchre.
On Good Friday, the Way of the Cross is solemnly observed, reflecting on Jesus’ sacrifice. Holy Saturday brings the Easter Vigil and the ancient tradition of the Holy Fire, symbolizing the descent of the Holy Spirit.
Finally, Easter Sunday is a day of great celebration as all Christians come together to rejoice in the Resurrection of the Lord. It is a time of joy, unity, and faith shared by believers from all corners of the world.
