Catholic advocates in Australia are warning lawmakers of the dangers that pornography exposure poses to children, including the normalization of violent sexual behavior among young people.
The Parliament of New South Wales has initiated public hearings for its inquiry into the impacts of harmful pornography on mental, emotional, and physical health.
The inquiry will focus on the age of first exposure to pornography, its impact on body image, and the effects of exposure to violent and misogynistic content on children, teenagers, and young adults.
Advocates have long highlighted the negative effects of pornography on young consumers, with easy access to the internet and smartphones contributing to its widespread availability to children.
The inquiry aims to evaluate the psychological and physiological impacts of harmful porn on at-risk groups such as children and young people, as well as explore potential restrictions on its use.
‘All forms of pornography are harmful’
Various Catholic groups and advocates, including Deirdre Little, the national bioethics convener of the Catholic Women’s League Australia, have participated in the parliamentary inquiry.
