Welcome to a story of unity, friendship, and solidarity between two sister churches that transcends borders and political tensions. Bishop Edouard Sinayobye of the Diocese of Cyangugu in Rwanda recently embarked on a symbolic visit to the Archdiocese of Bukavu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, highlighting the deep historical ties that bind these two communities together.
The close geographical proximity between the dioceses, less than an hour’s walk apart, mirrors the genuine fraternal spirit and shared commitments to peace and justice that unite them. Despite the ongoing conflict in the Bukavu region and the wider eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Bishop Sinayobye’s visit emphasizes the enduring bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood that exist between the people of these two regions.
Accompanied by a delegation of priests, including Father Valens Niragire, Secretary General of the Episcopal Commission for Justice and Peace in Rwanda, Bishop Sinayobye highlighted the cultural, spiritual, and fraternal connections that have long existed between Cyangugu and Bukavu. “Despite the challenges our countries face, we stand together in prayer, kindness, and positive actions towards each other,” affirmed Bishop Sinayobye.
A significant moment during the visit was a meeting with the Diocesan Commission for Justice and Peace in Bukavu, where the delegation was warmly welcomed by Father Justin Nkunzi, the Commission’s Director. Father Nkunzi underscored the importance of joint initiatives between the dioceses in promoting peace, social cohesion, and reconciliation in a region plagued by conflict.
At Bukavu’s Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace, Bishop Sinayobye and Archbishop François-Xavier Maroy Rusengo of Bukavu, along with their respective personnel, came together in prayer. Archbishop Rusengo expressed gratitude for the visit, emphasizing the deep spiritual bond that unites the two dioceses. “More than friends, we are brothers and sisters, both naturally and spiritually. The Church of Christ transcends political borders and is founded on the unity of God’s children,” declared Archbishop Rusengo.
This visit aligns with the vision of the Catholic Bishops of Central Africa to foster warm relationships among themselves, transcending political tensions and promoting friendship among the faithful and ordinary people. It serves as a powerful testimony to the enduring spirit of unity and solidarity that can bridge divides and build a more peaceful and harmonious world.
