U.S. Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Missouri, is pushing for new legislation to establish Easter as a federal holiday, allowing families to celebrate “the holiest day in Christianity” together.
Schmitt took to X to share his rationale for federally recognizing Easter, highlighting the fact that “81% of Americans celebrate Easter.” He emphasized the challenges families face in coming together on this important day due to the current holiday schedule.
81% of Americans celebrate Easter.
But our current holiday schedule makes it way too difficult for families to celebrate together.

The new bill is in its early stages but aims to make Easter Monday a legal public holiday, a move Schmitt believes is a necessary recognition of a tradition deeply rooted in Western civilization.
“Easter Monday is already observed as a public holiday in various nations worldwide, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and most of Western Europe,” Schmitt pointed out. “In America, we have a precedent with the ‘National Day of Prayer’ established by Missouri’s own President Truman.”
