On April 15th, we will commemorate the second anniversary of the conflict in Sudan, a tragic event that has resulted in the loss of countless lives and the displacement of millions of families. Pope Francis emphasizes the urgent need for peace and calls on all parties involved to embrace dialogue. He also appeals to the global community to offer assistance to those in need.
The crisis in Sudan
The conflict in Sudan erupted on April 15, 2023, between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), following political instability after the ousting of President Omar al-Bashir. The devastating war has left towns destroyed, cities in ruins, and a death toll in the tens of thousands.
Over 12.4 million people have been displaced, with more than 3.3 million seeking refuge abroad. The United Nations warns of a humanitarian crisis of immense magnitude, with millions in dire need of aid.
Remembering Lebanon
Pope Francis also requests prayers for Lebanon, a country plagued by a tragic civil war that began half a century ago. He prays for peace and prosperity to prevail in the region.
Prayers for Peace
In his message, the Pope extends his prayers to other conflict-ridden nations such as Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar, and South Sudan. He implores for peace to reign in these troubled lands.
