Experience the Way of the Cross at the Colosseum in 2025
Witness the annual Via Crucis or Way of the Cross ceremony at the iconic Colosseum in Rome on Good Friday, April 18, 2025, at 9:15 PM.
Step into history as the torchlit procession, dating back to the 18th century and revived in 1964, draws thousands of faithful followers to reflect on meditations re-enacting Christ’s crucifixion.
No tickets are required for this powerful event, which is a significant part of the Vatican’s liturgical program for Holy Week or Settimana Santa.
Be aware that the ceremony will lead to closures at the Colosseum, so plan accordingly. Bookings for that day are currently unavailable, as stated on the website of the Parco Archeologico del Colosseo.
Although usually presided over by Pope Francis, who is currently recovering from pneumonia and has not attended the event in the last two years, the solemn Via Crucis will still be a memorable experience, broadcast live on Italian television channel RAI Uno and live-streamed by Vatican Media.
Expect increased security measures during the event, with road closures and bus detours around the Colosseum, as well as the closure of the Colosseo subway station from 1:00 PM. The nearest Metro B stations will be Circo Massimo and Cavour.
Stay tuned for full transport details on Rome’s mobility website closer to the event date.
