Rome’s 2,778th Birthday Celebration in 2025
Get ready to witness Rome blow out 2,778 candles on its birthday on 21 April 2025. The Eternal City will come alive with historical re-enactments, including costumed parades past the iconic Colosseum and thrilling gladiator fights in the historic Circus Maximus.
Known as Natale di Roma, this annual birthday celebration is rooted in the legendary founding of Rome by Romulus in 753 BC.
Join in the festivities this year as the spectacular costumed parade through Rome coincides with Easter Monday, a public holiday in Italy.
For the past three decades, the Gruppo Storico Romano, a historical dramatic society, has been marking Rome’s birthday with re-enactments of battles, Roman rituals, and displays of ancient theatre and dance. The group also commemorates the assassination of Julius Caesar every year on 15 March.
This year’s Natale di Roma festival will take place over the Easter holiday weekend from 19-21 April.

The Natale di Roma event has grown significantly since Sergio Iacomoni, the founder and president of the Gruppo Storico Romano, first celebrated it with a few friends at the Colosseum 30 years ago. Today, the festival receives institutional support from various entities, including the European parliament, Italy’s culture ministry, and several foreign embassies.
This year, expect around 1,500 costumed participants, with hundreds traveling to Rome from across Europe at their own expense every April.

Most of the Natale di Roma events will be centered in the Circus Maximus, featuring a gladiator school, a gladiator tournament, and live music performances by the Italian army band and the Orchestra Filarmonica Città di Roma.
Don’t miss the trench-digging ritual, known as the tracciato del solco, which harkens back to the founding of ancient Roman towns when offerings were made to the gods for protection.

Experience other re-enactments like the ancient Palilia ceremony, honoring the goddess Pales, and the traditional Harpastum ball game, considered the ancestor of rugby.

The grand parade, the highlight of the Natale di Roma festivities, will dazzle on Monday, 21 April, with a route from and to the Circus Maximus via the Colosseum.
