Pontiff’s Surprise Appearance at St Peter’s Square
Pope Francis made a surprise appearance at St Peter’s Square on Sunday following his recent return to the Vatican after a five-week hospitalization for double pneumonia. The 88-year-old pontiff, in his wheelchair and accompanied by his nurse Massimiliano Strappetti, entered the piazza at the end of a Mass for the Jubilee of the Sick and Healthcare Workers.
Although his arrival was unannounced, Pope Francis greeted cheering crowds in a sunny Piazza San Pietro, expressing gratitude and saying, “Happy Sunday to all of you, thank you very much.”
Despite wearing nasal tubes for supplemental oxygen, which are gradually being reduced, the pontiff’s voice sounded fragile but stronger than his last public appearance before leaving Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on 23 March.

Following doctor’s advice to rest for at least two months, the Vatican reported that Pope Francis’ health was improving, and he was “in good spirits” as he continued his work activities.
During the Mass, Archbishop Rino Fisichella read out the Sunday homily written by the pontiff, where he shared his experience with illness and emphasized the importance of supporting the fragile in society.
In his Angelus blessing, Pope Francis offered prayers for doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers, acknowledging the challenges they face and calling for the support and respect they deserve.
