In a time where fake news and geopolitical tensions run rampant, the significance of public service radio in safeguarding democracy cannot be understated. This sentiment was echoed by participants at the recent 31st EBU (European Broadcasting Union) Radio Assembly held in Paris.
Representatives from 33 countries gathered at Radio France headquarters for this prestigious event, including Alessandro Gisotti from Vatican Radio. The Assembly saw the election of new members to the Radio Committee, tasked with navigating the evolving media landscape. Sibyle Veil of Radio France was reconfirmed as Committee head, with Graham Ellis of the BBC as Deputy Director.
During the summit, solidarity was shown towards Ukrainian Public Radio amidst ongoing conflict, and support for Radio Free Europe facing closure threats. The need for European public service media to band together in defense of press freedom was emphasized.
Youth engagement and leveraging new technologies like artificial intelligence in radio programming were key discussion points. Music’s enduring appeal in fostering unity, especially during challenging times like the pandemic, was highlighted.
Concluding the Assembly, Sibyle Veil emphasized the importance of credibility in public service media, especially in radio. The focus now shifts to the upcoming EBU General Assembly in London, hosted by the BBC in July.
