In the discussions, appreciation was expressed for the good bilateral relations and satisfaction for the upcoming beatification of the Jesuit martyr Eduard Profittlich, the first blessed of the Eastern European country.

The “perspectives for the end of the war in Ukraine” were at the center of this morning’s discussion on April 3, between Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin and the President of the Republic of Estonia, Alar Karis. The head of state was received at the State Secretariat by the cardinal, accompanied by Monsignor Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations.

“During the friendly meeting – as reported by a statement from the Holy See Press Office – appreciation was expressed for the good bilateral relations, highlighting the positive contribution of the local Catholic community to Estonian society. Satisfaction was also expressed for the upcoming beatification of Archbishop Eduard Profittlich, a Jesuit martyr and the first blessed of Estonia.” Finally, the note also reports, “discussions also focused on bilateral, regional, and international issues, with particular reference to the perspectives for the end of the war in Ukraine.”
