“There doesn’t seem to be any order in the disorder. There is no clear path through the complexity and chaos that is created when all of the United States’ trading partners are hit. Over the past eighty years, trade between Europe and the USA has created millions of jobs.
Consumers on both sides of the Atlantic have benefited from reduced prices.” This was stated by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in response to the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.
“I agree with Trump that others are unfairly taking advantage of the current rules. I am ready to support any effort to make the global trading system suitable for the realities of the global economy. However, I also want to be clear: resorting to tariffs as the first and only tool will not solve the problem,” emphasized von der Leyen.
