For 175 years, La Civiltà Cattolica has been a “friendly presence”, offering invaluable insights to interpret world events through the lens of faith. It has provided “intelligent service for the Holy See and the Church”, with a commitment to truth and providing space for dialogue and debate.
Founded in 1850 at the request of Blessed Pope Pius IX, La Civiltà Cattolica has stood the test of time as a beacon of Christian faith, guiding readers through history, politics, culture, science, and art in alignment with the teachings of the Pope and the Holy See.
In a message marking its anniversary, Pope Francis acknowledged the magazine’s unique contribution to journalism, urging its team to continue their work “with joy and good journalism that listens to all voices and embodies that docile gentleness that does good to the heart”.
William McCormick SJ, a US Jesuit contributor to the magazine, expressed that the anniversary is not just a celebration of the past, but a moment to embrace the present and future opportunities to serve the world.
A commitment to peace
During the ceremony, Cardinal Pietro Parolin praised La Civiltà Cattolica for helping readers develop a Christian perspective for almost two centuries. He commended the publication for its support during significant moments for the Catholic Church, such as the Second Vatican Council initiated by Saint John XXIII.
Cardinal Parolin encouraged the Jesuits to continue their mission in alignment with the words of Pope Francis and his predecessors, expressing gratitude for the magazine’s cultural and educational impact and its presence in the digital realm.
The Cardinal emphasized the publication’s dedication to respecting human dignity in all circumstances and promoting peace, calling on the staff to pave new paths and share signs of hope in a world in need of them.
