Five years ago, on this very day, a momentous event occurred in an isolated St. Peter’s Square. The Pope stood alone, surrounded only by the lights of lighthouses and the distant sounds of sirens. Humanity was confined to their homes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, yet the Pope was there, a beacon of hope in the heart of Christianity. “We realized we were in the same boat, all fragile and disoriented, but at the same time important and necessary, all called to row together, all in need of mutual comfort. In this boat… we are all in this boat,” Francis said at the time.
Fast forward five years, and it is now the Pope who finds himself confined to his home, Santa Marta, continuing his recovery after a life-threatening bout of pneumonia. Despite being physically isolated, he is spiritually connected to many through prayers. The world may face different storms today, but the message remains the same – “We’re all in this boat.”
His Vision for the World and the Church
Jorge Mario Bergoglio continues to guide the Church, even during his Lent spent at the Gemelli Hospital. From his window, he observes the turmoil in various regions and calls for peace amidst conflicts. His reflections during this time touch upon the need for compassion and peace in war-torn areas.
“Disarming Words, Minds, the Earth”
Amidst his recovery, the Pope emphasizes the importance of disarmament, starting with the use of words. He believes that words have the power to either unite or divide, and advocates for peaceful dialogue over violence. His message resonates in a world marred by conflict and tension.
More than 40 Appointments and a Chirograph
During his hospitalization, the Pope made numerous appointments and decisions related to Church governance. From the establishment of a commission for donations to the appointment of key officials, his leadership remains unwavering even in challenging times.
The Beginning of a Journey
Despite his health struggles, the Pope remains committed to his duties. Through catechesis, messages, and letters, he continues to guide the Church towards a path of hope and unity. His decision to establish an Ecclesial Assembly in 2028 showcases his dedication to the universal Church.
