The Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union: A Call for Unity
The Plenary Assembly of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) recently concluded with a powerful plea for European unity in the face of global instability and uncertainty. As conflicts escalate worldwide, the bishops urge the EU to uphold its core values of democracy, rule of law, and peace.

Against the backdrop of increasing conflicts across the globe, including within Europe, EU bishops are advocating for the European Union to uphold its founding principles of peace, respect for human rights, and democracy. The call for unity was made as COMECE wrapped up its three-day Spring Plenary Assembly in Nemi, near Rome, where discussions centered on the current state of affairs in the world.
The Challenge of Multilateralism in a World of Resurgent Nationalism
In their final statement titled “Looking to Europe with Hope,” the bishops expressed deep concerns about the growing fragmentation of international relations, fueled by nationalism and the weakening of democratic principles. This trend, they argue, has led to increased competition and conflicts that often violate international law, as seen in the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
As Europe faces one of its most significant crises since World War II, the bishops are urging European leaders to draw inspiration from historical milestones such as the Schuman Declaration and the 1975 Helsinki Final Act. These moments highlight the importance of dialogue, cooperation, and a commitment to shared values in fostering peace and stability.
Upholding EU’s Founding Principles and Ideals
In the midst of turmoil, the bishops call on European leaders to embrace the values of human dignity, solidarity, democracy, and the common good, as exemplified by past agreements that have shaped the region’s history. They align themselves with Pope Francis in viewing Europe as a beacon of peace and development.
Fostering Peace Through Diplomacy
One critical issue addressed in the statement is European defense in the wake of recent global events. While acknowledging the need for a robust defense, the bishops caution against unchecked militarization that could fuel an arms race and detract from efforts to promote peace and social welfare.
Instead, they advocate for diplomatic solutions to prevent further conflicts and ensure that Europe remains a project of peace and a source of development. They emphasize the importance of solidarity in supporting vulnerable populations within and beyond Europe’s borders.
Championing Human Rights on the Global Stage
The bishops emphasize the EU’s role as a global champion of human rights, social justice, and environmental sustainability. They call for the Union to maintain its credibility in these areas and continue to stand by its founding principles, serving as a stabilizing force for both its citizens and the global community.
“As the European Union navigates these uncertain times, it is our profound hope that it will remain faithful to its founding principles and continue to act as a united, trustful, and integrating force for its neighborhood and for the world.”
