The conference, held from the 27th to the 29th of March, explores the ‘Missio Dei’, or Mission of God, in today’s world. The Society of the Divine Word, founded in 1875 by Arnold Jansen, now consists of over 5,700 missionaries known as ‘Verbites’, operating in 79 countries.
God’s mission today
Fr Stephen Bevans, an American Divine Word Missionary and theologian, emphasized the goal of the conference to understand and move forward in today’s mission work. The conference focuses on four key aspects of the Missio Dei: ‘Healing wounds’, ‘Challenged by postmodernity’, ‘Learning from cultures’, and ‘Inspired by religions’.
Fr Bevans highlighted the importance of dialogue with other religions to gain a deeper understanding of Christianity, acknowledging that God works beyond the confines of the Church.

Healing a wounded world
The conference featured a diverse range of speakers, including former Senator Leila de Lima from the Philippines and Joseph Kwame Blay, a Franciscan friar from Ghana. Fr Kasmir Nema, General Communications Coordinator for the Society, highlighted the mission of the Divine Word Missionaries to work with marginalized communities and be agents of healing in challenging situations.
