In a telegram sent on Friday, Pope Francis expressed his sorrow for the loss of life and destruction caused by the earthquake. He offered prayers for the souls of the deceased and assured his spiritual support to all those affected by the tragedy.
The Pope also remembered the emergency personnel working tirelessly to care for the injured and displaced, asking for divine fortitude and perseverance for their efforts.
Assessing the Damage
As aid agencies struggle to assess the extent of the devastation, the situation remains dire. The earthquake, followed by several aftershocks, has left Myanmar in a state of emergency. Communication challenges in the country have hindered the full understanding of the damage.
While the death toll is yet to be confirmed, rescue workers anticipate casualties in the hundreds. A major hospital in Naypyidaw has been overwhelmed with injured individuals, highlighting the urgent need for medical supplies and blood donations in the hardest-hit areas.
In response to the crisis, six regions have been declared a state of emergency as disturbing images of collapsed buildings and infrastructure circulate online. The impact of the earthquake is substantial, emphasizing the critical need for humanitarian aid.
Impact in Thailand
Neighbouring Thailand also felt the tremors, resulting in casualties and significant damage. In Bangkok, an unfinished high-rise building collapsed, claiming lives and trapping dozens under the rubble. The city has been declared a disaster area as rescue efforts continue.
The earthquake’s epicentre in central Myanmar, a region already grappling with internal displacement and conflict, adds to the complexity of aid delivery. Reports of tremors in other countries, including China, Cambodia, Bangladesh, and India, underscore the widespread impact of the disaster.
Hope Amidst Tragedy
As the world watches the unfolding tragedy, prayers from Pope Francis and the global community offer hope and solidarity. Local and international efforts are in motion to minimize the devastation and save lives in the wake of this catastrophic event.
