As the conflict in the Holy Land raged on, Father Marwan found himself in Rome. However, he made the journey to Jerusalem every two months to film and record his programs for the Christian Media Center, the communication channel of the Custody.
In this exclusive interview, Father Marwan opens up about his firsthand experience during the war in Gaza and shares his anticipation and eagerness to welcome pilgrims back to Israel.
Insights on the Conflict in the Holy Land
Being closely associated with the CARF Foundation, Father Marwan sheds light on how a Catholic navigated through the turmoil in Israel: “It’s important to note that the conflict didn’t originate between Palestinians and Israelis; it was between Hamas and Israelis, a distinction that must be made.”
Amidst the chaos, Father Marwan, a Catholic Christian, grappled with anxiety and fear, uncertain about what lay ahead. He emphasizes that being a Catholic or Christian in Israel doesn’t set one apart from other faiths.
His upbringing in an ecumenical family and exposure to various rites and faiths give Father Marwan a unique perspective on the religious tapestry of the Holy Land.
Building Bridges for Peace
During times of conflict, Father Marwan emphasizes the crucial role of Catholics in Jerusalem as bridge builders for peace. “Our mission is to foster peace among the diverse population of the Holy Land, transcending ethnic, religious, and national divides,” he explains.
Anticipating Pilgrims’ Return
With the ceasefire in place, Father Marwan eagerly awaits the return of pilgrims to Israel. He underscores the significance of Christian pilgrims visiting the holy sites, offering solace to the war-torn region.
As the Custos of the Holy Places and the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem call for pilgrims to resume their visits, Father Marwan affirms the profound impact of their presence on the local community.
Unity in the Midst of Chaos
Father Marwan stresses the importance of the international presence of the universal Church in Israel post-war. He believes that the solidarity of Christian pilgrims will bring comfort to the suffering population and strengthen the bond with the universal Church.
As we look towards the Jubilee of Hope, let us heed the call to pilgrimage, bringing hope and unity to the Holy Land.
