Embracing Mercy: Pope Francis Calls Confessors to be Ministers of Reconciliation
When Pope Francis speaks, the world listens. His message on Thursday, 27 March, was no exception as he called upon confessors to be “ministers of mercy” during the upcoming 2025 Holy Year. The Pope’s words were directed at participants of the 35th Course on the Internal Forum, organized by the Apostolic Penitentiary.
“Celebrating Mercy, particularly with the pilgrims of the Jubilee, is a privilege: God has made us ministers of Mercy by His grace, a gift we receive because we ourselves have been, and continue to be, the first to experience His forgiveness,” he stated.
The course, held from March 24-28, focuses on providing ongoing formation for confessors, highlighting the significance of their sacramental ministry. Pope Francis urged them to be men of prayer, emphasizing that prayer is the cornerstone of their ministry.
“In prayer are rooted the foundations of your ministerial action, through which you extend the work of Jesus, who still and always repeats: ‘Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin anymore’ (John 8:11),” the Pope emphasized.
As the Church embarks on the Jubilee Year, Pope Francis encouraged confessors to let the liberating word of the Lord resound, fostering renewal and reconciliation within the hearts of believers. He stressed the link between mercy and peace, asserting that true peace arises from God’s mercy and brings an unwavering hope.
In closing, Pope Francis expressed gratitude for the vital sacramental ministry of confessors and entrusted them to the care of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As we journey towards the Holy Year, may confessors embody the spirit of mercy and reconciliation, guiding the faithful towards renewal and inner peace.
