The Diocese of Arlington, Virginia, is advocating for a unique and meaningful approach this Lent by introducing a “Diocesan Day of Unplugging” on March 28. This initiative encourages Catholics to intentionally reduce screen time and digital media consumption in order to devote more time to their spiritual life and relationship with God.
Recognizing fasting as a form of self-discipline with a penitential focus, Bishop Michael Burbidge’s diocese views disconnecting from the internet, phones, and social media as a valuable and challenging fasting practice.
The diocese points to studies indicating that the average person spends over two hours daily on social media. This raises important questions about our priorities: Are we prioritizing screen time over spiritual growth? Are our online interactions taking precedence over nurturing real-life relationships in our communities?
The act of fasting, whether from food or modern luxuries, creates space for God in our lives. It serves as a reminder of our dependence on Him and helps us rekindle our relationship with the divine.
