After spending 38 days in the hospital for bilateral pneumonia, Pope Francis has returned to Casa Santa Marta to continue his recovery. Despite the limitations imposed by his convalescence and ongoing therapies, the Pontiff has reclaimed his space in the Vatican residence, particularly in suite 201 where he resides. The entire second floor of Santa Marta is dedicated to the Pope, his work needs, and space for his collaborators.
No special arrangements have been made for the Pope’s recovery, as stated by his attending physician, Luigi Carbone, during a briefing with journalists. In case of emergencies, the Vatican City’s 24-hour health and hygiene service will be available. Pope Francis requires oxygen, which is administered through nasal cannulas, and he will receive specialized care for his recovery.

Within the Vatican walls, the Pope continues with pharmacological therapies and motor and respiratory physiotherapy. The latter will aid in his rehabilitation to restore normal speaking abilities. Doctors have advised Francis to rest adequately and limit visits and meetings as much as possible. Neurosurgeon Giulio Maira, founder of the Athena Foundation, emphasized the severity of the Pope’s illness and praised his recovery.
Maira expressed his admiration for the Pope’s sensitivity and intelligence, highlighting an instance where Francis recognized and mentioned a woman holding yellow flowers among a crowd during his hospital balcony appearance. As the Pope begins his full recovery in the Vatican, the Israeli embassy to the Holy See criticized his recent Angelus address expressing sorrow over the conflict in Gaza, calling for dialogue and peace.
“Israel’s operation complies with international law, while Hamas deliberately targets civilians. Israel takes extraordinary measures to minimize harm to civilians,” the embassy’s statement read. Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin expressed concern over the violation of international law and emphasized the need for dialogue and peace in conflict zones worldwide.
