Zambia’s Chikuni Mission Celebrates 120 Years of Faith and Service
The historic Chikuni Mission in Zambia, established by the French Jesuits led by Fr. Joseph Moreau, celebrated its 120th anniversary in a grand event attended by dignitaries, church leaders, and thousands of faithful from the Monze Diocese. The mission, a Catholic enclave, is now embarking on a five-year preparatory programme leading up to its 125th anniversary.
President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia graced the anniversary event and praised the mission for its contributions to evangelization, education, healthcare, and the preservation of the Tonga culture. The theme of the celebration was “120 Years of Faith, Service, and Community.”
The Journey to 125 Years
Bishop Raphael Mweempwa of Monze Diocese launched the five-year programme, honoring the sacrifices and dedication of the mission’s founders. Despite the challenges they faced, the early missionaries persevered in spreading the faith and improving the lives of the local community.
Fr. Joseph Moreau’s approach of working closely with local collaborators was highlighted, emphasizing the importance of empowering the community through education and faith formation.
The Legacy of Chikuni Mission
Chikuni Mission’s success was made possible by the generosity of pioneers like Chief Moonze and local supporters who worked hand in hand with the missionaries. The introduction of the ox-driven plough, known as “Joko,” revolutionized agriculture in the region, ensuring food security and prosperity.
President Hichilema acknowledged the enduring legacy of the Jesuit missionaries, who not only preached the Gospel but also laid the foundations for education and healthcare. The Chikuni Community Radio, celebrating its Silver Jubilee, continues to serve as a vital communication tool for the community.
Unity Between Church and State
Bishop Mweempwa emphasized the importance of respectful dialogue and collaboration between the Church and the government for the common good. He commended the Zambian Government’s response to recent challenges and called for continued cooperation in providing quality education, healthcare, and information to all citizens.
As Chikuni Mission looks towards its 125th anniversary, the spirit of faith, service, and community continues to inspire generations, showcasing the enduring impact of a mission founded on love and dedication.
