Trapani Rally Honoring Innocent Victims of the Mafia
Italy commemorates the Day of Remembrance for Innocent Victims of the Mafia on 21 March each year. This year, a major anti-mafia rally is set to take place in the Sicilian city of Trapani, organized by Libera, a coalition against the mafia.
Thousands are expected to attend the procession through the streets of Trapani, starting at Piazza Garibaldi and ending at Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, where the names of the 1,101 innocent victims of the mafia will be remembered.
Headed by Father Luigi Ciotti, founder and president of Libera, the rally will see participation from relatives of victims, state institutions, trade unions, schools, and more, all coming together to honor those lost to mafia violence.
Victims include a wide range of individuals from different walks of life such as citizens, judges, journalists, police officers, priests, and politicians. This year marks the 30th edition of the commemoration, recognized by the Italian state since 2017.
