Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin denied that during his recent visits to Pope Francis at Gemelli Hospital, they had discussed the possibility of the pope’s resignation.
“No, no, not at all,” the cardinal replied to reporters after the “Iftar: Ramadan Table” event at the St. Regis Hotel in Rome on Monday.
Parolin spoke about the 88-year-old pontiff’s health and his ability to lead the Catholic Church.
“I think we should rely on the medical reports to understand the pope’s condition,” he said.
The cardinal mentioned that during his last visit to Pope Francis on March 9, he noticed an improvement in the pope’s condition.
“I saw him a week ago and found him better than before,” he stated, emphasizing that official information from the doctors should be followed.
Parolin also discussed the governance of the Catholic Church and the Holy Father’s role in decision-making, mentioning that despite the limitations in their conversations due to the pope’s health, several important decisions were presented to him for his input.
