Welcome to our blog where we delve into the alarming wave of abductions targeting Catholic priests in Nigeria over the past decade. According to a recent report by Fides Agency, a total of 145 priests were kidnapped between 2015 and 2025, with 11 tragically losing their lives and four still missing.
The latest incident occurred on March 5, when Fr. Sylvester Okechukwu of the Diocese of Kafanchan, Kaduna State, was brutally murdered a day after being kidnapped. In another heartbreaking event, Seminarian Andrew Peter was killed while being abducted along with Fr. Philip Ekweli in the Diocese of Auchi, Edo State.
Kidnappings have been a persistent issue in Nigeria, with armed groups targeting not only priests but also businesspeople and individuals perceived as well-off. The rise in ransom-related kidnappings has become more prevalent, especially since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kidnappings in Nigeria: A Growing Concern
Since 2009, Boko Haram insurgents have been responsible for numerous abductions, particularly in the northeast and northwest regions of Nigeria. However, the trend has evolved into a booming industry tied to the country’s economic challenges. Between July 2022 and June 2023, over 3,600 people were abducted in 582 cases, with millions of dollars paid in ransoms.
The report highlights Kaduna as the deadliest Nigerian state for priests, with a high number of abductions and killings. Other states like Abuja, Benin, and Onitsha have also experienced tragic losses among clergy members.
Regional Response to Violence
The Regional Episcopal Conference of West Africa (RECOWA) recently issued a statement condemning the violence against Catholic clergy in the region. The bishops emphasized the need for prayers and support for priests ministering in high-risk areas, urging them to remain steadfast in their mission despite the dangers they face.
In conclusion, the rise in kidnappings and killings of priests in Nigeria is a concerning trend that requires immediate action and solidarity within the community. Let us stand together in prayer and support for those risking their lives to serve others.
