On a Friday morning, ambassadors and members of the diplomatic corps gathered in the Pauline Chapel of the Apostolic Palace to attend a Mass, specifically requested to pray for Pope Francis.
Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State, presided over the Mass and expressed gratitude to those who initiated the idea of collective prayer.
In his homily, Cardinal Parolin emphasized the intention of the gathering to pray for the Holy Father’s health, as he recovers from bilateral pneumonia at Rome’s Gemelli hospital. He also acknowledged the 12th anniversary of Pope Francis’ election to the papacy.
The Cardinal delved into the significance of prayer, highlighting its essence as an avenue to open our hearts to God, rather than a means to inform Him of our desires, which He already knows.
Reflecting on the day’s Gospel, which focused on the righteousness required for entry into the Kingdom of Heaven, Cardinal Parolin emphasized Jesus’ teachings on loving our neighbors, even amidst disagreements.
He underscored the role of diplomacy in preventing conflicts, stating that peace necessitates the disarming of language and the pursuit of God’s will in our relationships.
Cardinal Parolin reminded the diplomats of Jesus’ call for reconciliation before engaging in acts of worship, prioritizing charity over all other obligations.
He echoed Pope Francis’ guidance on using three key words in relationships: “Please, Sorry, and Thank you,” as symbols of moving from confrontation to goodwill.
In conclusion, Cardinal Parolin reassured that God equips us with the grace to fulfill His Word, making our prayers for the Holy Father’s health powerful and confident.
As we reflect on this message of diplomacy, peace, and prayer, let us continue to uphold Pope Francis in our thoughts and prayers, trusting in the healing power of faith and unity.
May our collective prayers bring strength and comfort to Pope Francis and inspire peace and reconciliation in our hearts and in the world.
Let us heed the call to embody charity and seek harmony with our neighbors, as we strive for a world guided by love, compassion, and understanding.
