These are the “sentinel crimes” that showed an increase in 2024, a trend that is “constantly rising”. This is revealed in the report “March 8 – International Women’s Day”, prepared by the Criminal Analysis Service and presented today at the Central Criminal Police Directorate, an interagency office of the Department of Public Security, in Rome.
For cases of sexual violence, there was a peak in 2024 (6,587) and a 6% increase compared to 2023, a trend that has been on the rise since 2020 when the lowest value was recorded during the period analyzed by the report: 4,497.
An exception was seen in 2023, with a slight decrease compared to 2022. The trend in combating these crimes also shows an increase in 2024 compared to 2023, with an 8% increase in reports against alleged perpetrators, resulting in a +6% increase in crimes committed. Women victims were predominant in the 2023-2024 biennium, with an incidence of 91% in both periods.
As for acts of stalking, the values in 2024 are the highest since 2019, both for crimes committed and reports against alleged perpetrators, with a 4% increase in the former, totaling 20,289, and a 12% increase in the latter compared to 2023. Female victims accounted for around 75% in the last two years.
A constant increase is also observed in cases of abuse against family members and cohabitants, showing a progressive growth and reaching the highest values since 2019 in 2024, with an 11% increase in crimes committed compared to 2023, and a 17% increase in the outcomes of the counteraction. The incidence of female victims stood at 81% in both 2023 and 2024.
For crimes introduced with the red code, revenge porn shows a constant increase, except for 2022. In 2024, there was a 6% increase in crimes compared to the previous year and an 18% increase in reports against alleged perpetrators.
In 2024, there were 113 homicides of women (-6% compared to 2023) out of a total of 321, with 99 in a family/relationship context (+3%); of these, 61 died at the hands of a partner/ex-partner (-5%). After a steady increase from 2021 to 2023, the number of homicides of women in 2024 was the lowest in recent years, with a -6% decrease compared to 2023, matching the figures of 2019. The report also reveals that despite a decline in the last year, out of the total homicide victims – 341 in 2023 and 321 in 2024 – women accounted for 35% in both 2023 and 2024.
Regarding homicides of women, the report shows a gradual and consistent increase until 2022, while in the last two years, there has been a progressive decrease in cases.
Furthermore, in 2024, compared to 2023, there was an almost doubling of police warnings (+94%) and more than triple the number of abusers removed from the family home (+224%), increasing from 399 to 1294.
