The Healing Power of Dog Therapy for Children Affected by War
The Caritas office in Odesa has launched a groundbreaking program that offers psychosocial and physical rehabilitation sessions for children who have been deeply impacted by the ravages of war. Led by the compassionate Olena Velychenko and her team of specially trained therapy dogs, this initiative aims to bring comfort and healing to those in need.
Meet Olena Velychenko: A Beacon of Hope
Olena Velychenko is a dedicated volunteer whose lifelong dream has been to create a safe haven where both children and adults can come together to learn about training and caring for dogs. Amid the turmoil of war, she has found solace in spreading compassion and creativity to those who need it the most.
Supporting Displaced and Disabled Children
Originally from Kherson in southern Ukraine, Olena’s dream of establishing a dog training center was interrupted by the onset of the Russian invasion. However, with the support of friends and benefactors, she managed to make her vision a reality in Odesa. Caritas then approached her to organize “dog therapy” sessions for children with disabilities and those displaced by the conflict, marking a new chapter in her journey.
The Transformative Power of Dog Therapy
Canine-assisted therapy is a proven method of psychosocial and physical rehabilitation that utilizes specially trained dogs to provide emotional and physiological support. These therapy sessions help stabilize the nervous system, reduce stress, and lower blood pressure—offering much-needed relief in a country plagued by ongoing violence and trauma.
“A therapy dog must possess specific qualities such as calmness, sociability, and non-aggression,” explains Olena. “Through careful selection and training, our dogs are prepared to handle high-stress environments and bring comfort to those in need.”
Bringing Joy and Healing to Children
The children who participate in these therapy sessions respond with boundless enthusiasm, petting and hugging the dogs, taking photos, and eagerly anticipating each visit. Olena recounts a heartwarming encounter with a young girl named Katya, who recognized her on a tram months after attending a session and waved joyfully. These interactions not only bring immediate joy but also foster long-term benefits by building confidence, creating new friendships, and reducing feelings of anxiety and depression.
Serving Amid Adversity
Despite the challenges posed by war, volunteers like Olena remain steadfast in their commitment to serving others. “Even the smallest act of kindness can bring immense happiness to someone’s life,” she affirms. “By providing moments of joy and connection, we are making a tangible difference in the lives of these children and their families.”
This work is not merely about therapy—it is about restoring hope and human connection amidst the chaos of conflict. The bond between these children and their therapy dogs serves as a beacon of light in the darkness, offering a glimmer of hope and healing in troubled times.
