Recently, during marches held on March 8 to commemorate International Women’s Day, several Catholic cathedrals and churches in Mexico fell victim to acts of vandalism, with graffiti defacing their walls and damage to their structures.
In Jalisco, the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of Most Holy Mary in Guadalajara was targeted with graffiti supporting abortion and denouncing the Catholic Church.

Similarly, in central Mexico, San José Cathedral in Toluca was also a target of feminist groups, who draped a green cloth – symbolizing the abortion movement – on its exterior gate. Statues in niches on the cathedral’s outer walls were also vandalized.
In Morelos, videos circulated on social media showing individuals attempting, unsuccessfully, to dismantle the protective fencing in front of the Cuernavaca Cathedral.
Lastly, in Oaxaca, participants in the march defaced the walls of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption with graffiti.
