Saudi Arabia is set to host crucial talks on Tuesday between the United States and Ukraine. This diplomatic effort comes in the wake of a recent rift that emerged during President Trump’s visit to the White House last month, leading to the suspension of military aid to Ukraine by the U.S.
Ceasefire Proposal for Air and Sea
Ukrainian officials have indicated that they plan to propose a ceasefire in the air and at sea during the upcoming talks, although the ceasefire is not expected to extend to land operations. The U.S. Department of State has reiterated President Trump’s commitment to ending the conflict swiftly, emphasizing the need for all parties to work towards a lasting peace.
In anticipation of the talks, President Trump expressed optimism, stating, “I think you’re gonna have … some pretty good results coming out of Saudi Arabia this week.”
The Holy See’s Call for Peace
For the Vatican, the pursuit of peace in Ukraine has been a longstanding priority. Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Holy See’s Secretary of State, has been vocal in advocating for negotiations to end the conflict. In a recent interview marking the 1000-day milestone of the war in Ukraine, Cardinal Parolin emphasized the urgent need for a truce, stating that it could be achieved swiftly if there is a genuine commitment to peace.
As Cardinal Parolin echoed the sentiments of Pope Francis, he emphasized the crucial role of leaders who prioritize peace over war, recognizing the grave consequences of prolonged conflict not only for Ukraine but for the wider region and the world.
