Uncovering the Three Shell Game Scam in Rome During Jubilee
Step into the bustling streets of Rome during the Jubilee and you may come across a seemingly innocent game known as the three shell game. However, beneath the surface lies a clever scam that has been targeting unsuspecting tourists, resulting in significant financial losses.
As the city welcomes an influx of visitors, the number of scammers engaging in this age-old street con is on the rise, particularly in areas like the historic center and around Piazza di Spagna.
Understanding the Scam
The scam typically involves a group of fraudsters who set up a simple game involving three shells and a small ball. The ball is placed under one of the shells, which are then shuffled quickly, making it challenging for the player to keep track of its location. Despite the appearance of a fair game, the dealer’s sleight of hand ensures that it is nearly impossible to win. Meanwhile, other members of the group, posing as spectators or winners, encourage tourists to participate, ultimately leading to substantial losses.
Rising Concerns and Actions Taken
Authorities have taken notice of the escalating issue, with at least 60 individuals identified and reported by the Carabinieri since October. Recent operations have led to the apprehension of nine additional individuals in central districts and at Pincio. Despite these efforts, the scam continues to pose a threat, especially with the upcoming Jubilee attracting millions of pilgrims.
As the risk of falling victim to this scam grows, authorities urge visitors to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. The Jubilee is intended as a time for spiritual reflection and cultural enrichment, not as an opportunity for fraudsters to exploit unsuspecting tourists.
