March 9, 2025 marked a significant event in St. Peter’s Square as the Jubilee of the World of Volunteering was commemorated with a special Holy Mass. Cardinal Michael Czerny read the homily prepared by Pope Francis, which delved into the profound meaning of Lent and the crucial role of volunteering in our modern society.
Jesus in the Desert: A Path of Obedience and Trial
The homily commenced by reflecting on how Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert (Lk 4:1), a place of silence that transforms into a space for listening and choosing amidst conflicting voices. This act of obedient surrender to the Father’s Spirit highlights the human experience of Jesus, who faced hunger and temptations from the devil for forty days. This experience invites us to acknowledge our own temptations and the constant presence of Jesus, guiding and empowering us on our journey of transformation.
The Temptations
Pope Francis explored three facets of Jesus’ temptations and their relevance to us:
- Jesus willingly enters the desert out of obedience, while our temptations are imposed on us, undermining our freedom. Yet, God, through Jesus, remains with us, especially in times of adversity.
- The devil seeks to sever Jesus from his relationship with the Father, tempting his identity as the Son of God. However, Jesus, in his faithfulness, transforms this relationship into a universal gift, sharing his connection with the Father for the salvation of all.
- While Jesus overcomes evil in the desert, foreshadowing his ultimate triumph at Easter, we may succumb to temptation. Nevertheless, God lifts us up with his forgiveness, turning our defeats into opportunities for redemption and hope.
Seeds of a New Humanity
Pope Francis expressed gratitude to the volunteers present, recognizing their selfless service that mirrors Jesus’ example. Their work with the sick, suffering, prisoners, youth, and elderly instills hope in our society. Amidst the deserts of poverty and isolation, their small acts of kindness and voluntary service sow seeds of a new humanity, bringing us closer to the divine garden envisioned by God for all.
This Jubilee of the World of Volunteering, coinciding with the onset of Lent, prompts us to contemplate our own trials and the significance of serving others. By emulating Jesus and the dedication of volunteers, we can transform the desolate areas of our lives into realms of hope and renewal.
