The Secret Service, responsible for the security of the US president, shot an armed man near the White House. The man was not killed and is now in the hospital.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Sunday, following an “armed confrontation” with law enforcement, as reported by the agency, cited by Sky News.
The confrontation took place near the intersection of 17th Street and F Street NW, less than five minutes’ walk from the White House.
The local police had reported a “suicidal individual” who may have traveled to Washington from Indiana, the Secret Service reported. Officers located the man’s vehicle and spotted a person on foot matching the description provided by the local police.
“When the officers approached, the individual brandished a firearm and an armed confrontation ensued, during which our personnel fired shots,” the Secret Service said in a statement on X, released by spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. It is unclear if the armed man opened fire.
The suspect was taken to the hospital and his condition is currently unknown. The Secret Service statement added that no agents were injured and the incident is under investigation.
Donald Trump was not at the White House at the time of the incident, as he was visiting his residence in Florida, Mar-a-Lago, over the weekend.
