According to the latest update from the Department of Penitentiary Administration, as of February 28, 2025, there were 2,729 women inmates in Italy, including 14 mothers with 14 children accompanying them, out of a total of 62,165 prisoners. This number makes them an “invisible minority within the prison system, at risk of denied rights and inadequate reintegration paths.” This issue is being discussed in Perugia on March 8th, during the event “Women in Prison” organized by the National Bar Council and its Italian Bar Foundation in collaboration with the newspaper Il Dubbio, at the Sala dei Notari in the Palazzo dei Priori.
The goal of the Italian Bar is to “shed light on the specificity of the female condition in prison. A reality that is still too often overlooked,” it has been stated. The event is attended by representatives from the legal, academic, and political worlds. Among others, the Mayor of Perugia, Vittoria Ferdinandi, the Vice President of the National Bar Council, Francesco Napoli, the President of the Perugia Bar Association, Carlo Orlando, the Vice President of the Italian Federation of Lawyers, Vittorio Minervini, the President of the association ‘Nessuno tocchi Caino’ Rita Bernardini, and Senator Susanna Donatella Campione (FdI).
