Supporting the Housing Emergency: Pope Francis’ Contribution
In recent weeks, Pope Francis made a generous contribution to the Don Roberto Sardelli Fund for housing emergencies before his hospitalization at Rome’s Gemelli Polyclinic.
The news of the Pope’s donation was revealed during a gathering in memory of Don Roberto Sardelli at the Roman parish of San Policarpo on January 30. The contribution, totaling one million euros, will be used to renovate a former clergy house in Rome, converting it into 20 apartments for those in need.
A Symbol of Charity and Hope
Cardinal Baldassare Reina, Vicar General of the Diocese of Rome, emphasized the importance of this gesture as the Church prepares to celebrate the Jubilee of seminarians, bishops, and priests in 2025. He stated that offering concrete acts of charity and hope is essential for spiritual preparation.
Highlighting the housing crisis during Pope Francis’ visit to the diocesan assembly at St. John Lateran, Cardinal Reina stressed the need for proactive measures to address the issue. By supporting the Don Roberto Sardelli Fund, named after a dedicated priest who served the homeless, the Church aims to assist families struggling to secure housing due to financial constraints.
Calling for Community Support
Cardinal Reina encouraged clergy members to contribute by donating a portion of their financial support or one month’s worth of income to the fund. He expressed hope that this initiative would inspire others to join in supporting the cause, raising awareness and actively addressing the housing emergency in Rome.
This act of solidarity reflects Pope Francis’ commitment to social justice and care for the marginalized, demonstrating the Church’s role in advocating for those in need.
