Fr. Jacob Shanet, Chancellor of the Archdiocese, confirmed this heartbreaking news in a statement provided to Vatican News.
Fr. Okechukwu was taken from his residence at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Tachira and found dead on Ash Wednesday, leaving the community in shock and sorrow.
A Dedicated Servant of God
Fr. Shanet described Fr. Okechukwu as a selfless servant who tirelessly spread the message of peace, love, and hope. His sudden and violent death has left a deep void within the diocesan family and beyond.
While the motive behind the killing remains unknown, the Kaduna State Police Command is actively searching for those responsible.
Another Kidnapping in Auchi Diocese
In a separate incident, Fr. Philip Ekweli and a seminarian were abducted in Nigeria’s Auchi Diocese. The parish residence and church were attacked by gunmen, leading to the abduction of the priest and seminarian.
Despite facing the armed kidnappers, local vigilantes were unable to prevent the abduction due to the superior firepower of the assailants.
These incidents highlight the ongoing challenges faced by religious leaders in Nigeria and the need for increased security measures to protect those who serve their communities with dedication and love.
