Amid the ongoing tensions and fighting in Myanmar, the Burmese armed forces have carried out a devastating attack on a Catholic pastoral center in the northern Kachin State. The St. Michael’s Catholic Church pastoral center in the rural area of Nan Hlaing, part of the Diocese of Banmaw, was bombed and destroyed on 3 March by the Burmese army, as reported by the Vatican’s Fides news agency. Despite the destruction, the faith of the local Catholic community remains unwavering.
Conflict in Kachin State
The conflict in Kachin State between the regular army and the ethnic Kachin forces has resulted in the displacement of thousands of residents. The Kachin Independence Army (KIA), which fights for self-determination, has joined the resistance against the ruling military junta, leading to intensified tensions and fighting in the region.
Resilience in the Face of Adversity
Despite the challenges faced by the local community, the Catholic faithful continue to gather for Mass under the trees, as it is deemed too dangerous to remain in the church. Fr. Wilbert Mireh, who assists the parish priest, expressed gratitude that there were no casualties in the recent attack. He highlighted the strength of their faith, with even children and young people invoking St. Michael for protection.
Despite the ongoing challenges and harsh conditions, the community’s faith and spirit remain unbroken, demonstrating their resilience in the face of adversity.
